If you are a tech-savvy international student choosing Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), the quality of a provider’s app, telehealth access and online claims system can make a real difference to your daily experience. While all OSHC funds must meet the same minimum benefits set out in the OSHC Deed with the Australian Government, the way you manage your cover day-to-day varies noticeably between insurers.
This article compares the digital experience across five registered Australian OSHC providers using only publicly available product information. We will not tell you which one to pick, but we will lay out how each fund’s app, telehealth offering and claims submission channels actually work so you can decide what suits you best.
What every OSHC policy includes – regardless of the app
All OSHC policies assist with the cost of hospital and medical treatment, ambulance services, and limited pharmaceuticals. The minimum coverage is defined by the OSHC Deed and is the same for every insurer. No OSHC policy pays for general treatment (extras) such as dental, optical or physiotherapy – you would need a separate extras policy for that.
What differs is how you interact with your cover. For a student managing everything from a phone, three features matter most:
- A well-designed app that shows your digital membership card, policy documents and claim status.
- Telehealth access that lets you speak to a GP without leaving home.
- Online claiming that avoids paper forms and lets you submit and track claims digitally.
Below is how the main OSHC providers compare on those three fronts.
Provider digital experience comparison
ahm OSHC
App: The ahm OSHC App is available on the App Store and Google Play. It allows you to view your cover details, submit claims, access health advice and support services, and find a health service provider. The app also hosts the Student Rewards program with discounts across brands like Apple, Samsung, Hoyts and Uber. Telehealth: ahm promotes the ability to access health support through the app, including a health and wellbeing hub, but does not list a standalone, 24/7 telehealth GP service as a core policy feature. Online claims: Claims can be submitted via the ahm OSHC app or through the online member services portal.
nib OSHC
App: The nib App provides a digital membership card for claiming, policy management, and access to nib services and programs. nib also integrates a companion rewards program and a mental health and wellbeing tool directly in the app. Telehealth: nib states that OSHC policyholders with GP benefits can access telehealth doctor appointments with experienced GPs at no out-of-pocket cost, available 24/7 through the nib App. Online claims: Digital claiming is built into the nib App. The fund also highlights that waiting periods already served with another insurer will be recognised when switching.
Medibank OSHC
App: The Medibank OSHC App (also known as the My Medibank app) lets you view cover details, submit claims, access health advice and support, and locate a provider. The app also hosts the Student Rewards Plus program. Telehealth: Through the app, Medibank OSHC members can access Online Doctor – a 24/7 online consultation service with qualified medical doctors, with no out-of-pocket costs for members 16 years or over. Dependants are currently not eligible. Online claims: Claims can be lodged via the app or through the online member portal.
Allianz Care Australia
App: The Allianz MyHealth portal and associated mobile apps allow members to submit medical claims, check claim status, view policy documents, and access a digital membership card. Telehealth: Allianz Care Telehealth, powered by Doctors on Demand, gives OSHC members 24/7 access to a qualified doctor via phone or video call. Allianz also provides Sonder, a separate support service offering 24/7 confidential safety, medical and mental health assistance through chat, phone or in-person response. Online claims: The MyHealth app and portal are built for digital claim submission and tracking.
BUPA Australia and CBHS International Health
At the time of this comparison, specific app features, telehealth arrangements and online claims workflows for BUPA’s OSHC product and CBHS International Health are not detailed in the verified public materials available to CompareOSHC. Both insurers are registered OSHC providers, and their respective websites are the best place to check current digital servicing options.
Things to check before you commit
- Visa compliance: Every policy listed above meets the OSHC requirements for student visa subclass 500. If your visa conditions change (for example, you move to a 485 graduate visa), contact your insurer – you may need a different policy.
- Waiting periods: If you switch from another fund, most insurers recognise waiting periods you have already served on equivalent cover. You will usually need to provide a clearance certificate from your previous fund.
- Extras cover: OSHC alone does not pay for dental, optical or physiotherapy. If you want those services, you can buy a separate extras policy from any Australian private health insurer or from your OSHC provider if they offer one.
- Pharmaceutical limits: OSHC pharmaceutical benefits are capped – commonly a maximum of $50 per prescription item, with total annual limits that vary by provider (often $300 for singles). If you need ongoing or high-cost medication, understand those caps before you rely solely on OSHC.

International students have different priorities, and your idea of a strong digital experience might lean toward a polished app, a genuinely no-gap telehealth service, or just a hassle-free online claims form. Check each provider’s website for current details, then pick the experience that feels right for you.
